Helpful Information for Voucher Holders

A quick reference for staying in good standing with your housing choice voucher — what to expect each year, and what to tell LMHA and when.

Annual Recertification

One year after receiving a voucher and finding a place to live, your annual recertification will be due. You will receive paperwork that you will be asked to complete and return to LMHA.

Reporting a Change in Income

Any time there is a change to your income, a new job, job loss, change in number of hours worked, or change in rate of pay, you need to notify LMHA within 10 days of the change. This requires a Change of Information form. Please call or stop by to pick up the form and return it to LMHA.

Changes to Your Household

LMHA requires a Change of Information form for:

  • Adding a person to your household
  • Removing a person from your household
Note: if a person moves in without prior approval from LMHA, or moves out without notifying LMHA, you could lose your voucher.
You need to notify LMHA within 10 days of the change.

Annual Inspection

Your home is inspected once per year. You will receive a letter with the date and time of the inspection. Anyone over 18 must be present to admit the inspector to your residence. Missing more than one inspection may terminate your voucher status with LMHA.

A request to reschedule an inspection must be in writing and forwarded to LMHA.

Requesting a Special Inspection

If you experience a problem with your residence during the year, you may request a special inspection — but only after notifying your landlord of the problem and giving them a reasonable amount of time to fix it. If the landlord doesn't resolve the issue, give LMHA a request in writing.

Moving to a New Address

After you receive a voucher, you must wait 12 months before requesting to move. Once the 12 months have passed, you may give LMHA a 30-day notice in writing that you want to move, and give your landlord notice per your lease.

Paperwork Deadlines

Any paperwork LMHA asks you to complete must be finished and turned in by the due date. Failure to do this may jeopardize your housing assistance/voucher.
